[ Lucy started to jog, and then stopped, because the chicken started to crow like she was being strangled (if chickens are able to make a sound when they are being strangled-- Lucy found that out the hard way).
It wasn't far before she reached Ben, even if it would be funny for me to have her just keep walking. ]
I'm Lucy, hello Ben!
[ The rooster continued to make a racket. Four went behind Lucy to bark at the rooster, and vice versa. ]
Are you armed?
[ Was that how she was supposed to begin conversations? Her own pistol was strapped to her hip. She had learned how to hide various knives and even a tiny gun on her person. Ben would never have to know, as long as he didn't act funny!! ]
[that isn't how these conversations are supposed to start out, but Ben can't hold it against her too much. the people of the wastes can be rather....unique. eccentric, too.]
I am, but I shan't hurt you unless you move to try and hurt me. I have some crap to trade, should you need it.
[It's possible... even probable, that Lucy has Snot Ear, a curable disease that makes her ears uh, snotty. Look it up, dummy.]
Scrap! Oh, ah-haha. Yeah. That makes sense. Do you happen to have any antibiotics or Rad-Away?
[The animals are well behaved, as one is still caged. Four begins to sniff around the area, and Lucy scans for a place for them to sit and chat.
A burned out house several meters away was left with the foundation and two lovely armchairs. Lucy gestured wildly,] We can chat! [And possibly get sniped.]
Lucy wanted to talk to Joshua-- for what reason? Probably to argue. She was very curious about the Legion, especially since she had seen first-hand their violence, their cruelty, their barbarism. How did this guy (Buggy said something about him being a Strong As Fuck Ice Mummy, even if everything Lucy had heard from NCR soldiers and holotapes said The Burned Man.
Religion was unfamiliar to her. No one in her Vault had a religion, though, occasionally her father would reference God. Some guy in the sky! He probably lied about that, too, that dumb jerk. She'd seen a cult in Vault 4, and she'd met Brotherhood members. Frankly, she didn't care for it.
Lucy had rented a room from the cute brothers at the Dugout Inn, and had settled outside at one of the tables. She had entrusted her pets to some random kids. Sure, it's fine!
Diamond City is hardly the welcoming place in the Commonwealth for a man like Joshua Graham, but not for any of the usual reasons. The security detail at the gate had checked his radiation levels three times with two separate Geiger counters before accepting that he was not, in fact, a ghoul in disguise. Or a plague-bearer. Joshua got the distinct impression they'd rather that had been the case; without good cause to keep him out, all the city's guards could do was none-too-subtly study his every move.
They could do as they pleased. Joshua had no interest in stirring the pot. The same, however, could not be said for Lucy.
If Joshua made a habit of meeting personally with every human in the country who had in some way been troubled by the Legion, he'd scarcely have the time to breath. But, for surviving a crucifixion, time was the smallest compensation he could offer Lucy.
Sure enough, when Joshua appeared from between the corrugated walls, unease rippled through the handful of customers sat outside. Diamond City folk were distrustful at the best of times; a stranger as odd as Joshua was bound to send a few of them for the Inn itself. For her part, clad in the bright blue of her vault suit, Lucy stood out almost as much as he did.
He approached her table with a nod of acknowledgement and, proverbially, a deep breath. "You must be Lucy."
Lucy wanted to go to Diamond City for a myriad of reasons. Everyone was talking about it in the area-- it was a community (and we know how she loved those), and it was an old baseball diamond! She'd never seen one in real life and was endeared with how they turned it into a home.
That, along with the fact that she needed to upgrade her gear and trade in her Vault suit. It made her stick out.
It was also word-of-mouth that she learned of Joshua, she never thought she'd have a chance to meet him. She just seemed lucky like that. The fact that he was willing to speak to her made her a little less confident in his story. A legend is just an exaggeration!
She was well aware of Joshua's approach (the security guards yell at each other so loud, probably how they used to shout at one another before the bombs, it was something she thought about as she waited). That and, when one sees a man clad in bandages and a vest with random letters on it... you notice!
Lucy had to stop herself from smiling wide while greeting him, it was just out of habit. "Yep. Lucy. That's me. And you're the ... guy. You can sit." In front of her was a Nuka-Cola that she'd gotten on the house, which she was nursing. "Do you want a drink-- erm, I could get you a straw?"
Close enough, now, Joshua took a moment to study the young woman- and she was young, in her early twenties at most, with the eyes and indeed the build of a radstag fawn separated from its herd. Appearances, of course, could be deceptive. For her to have learned all she had about him and still demanded to meet said something for her courage. Or foolhardiness. This time, at least, she hadn't turned it on a less forgiving target.
"Just 'Joshua'. And no, thank you." Somehow, he resisted the faint tinge of amusement that threatened to creep into his voice. For someone so horrified by his very existence she was being exceptionally polite. Vault dweller manners, he supposed- they always had their own little quirks. It made him nostalgic for a life he would never have had the opportunity to lead.
Joshua took a seek on the other side of the table; conveniently, given what they were here to discuss, the nearest two patrons immediately got up and made for the Inn proper, muttering in disgust. "Thank you for agreeing to meet me. Under the circumstances, I was fully prepared for you to shoot on sight."
Lucy folded her arms over her chest and slouched back into the seat. She noticed how the others moved into the inn, and she squinted over at Joshua.
"Do you think they know who you are, or are they worried you might be a ghoul?" Lucy was Pro-Ghoul in every way, she didn't even like to kill ferals (except when on drugs). Diamond City's bullshit did not please her; and the added Synth hate made her feel uncomfortable.
However, Goodneighbor had their own style when it came to security and justice. Avoiding a bloodbath was always Lucy's number one goal.
"Shooting you would solve nothing. I'm sorry I came on so strong, I was surprised that I could even find you. And I must say-- terminals make it easier to be angry. Knowing you were far from me, and couldn't see me? Made me super aggressive."
She sipped her Nuka-Cola and made a small, happy sound. "I think we should introduce ourselves, and maybe tell each other a little our lives, currently. And then maybe go backwards from there? Or if you wanted, we could start with your upbringing?"
There are props now, pay attention. Lucy had a clipboard with some paper (it appeared to be the un-printed side of some old, yellowing flyers. She uses her pencil to scribble at the top of the paper: JOSHUA GRAHAM. "Just the two names?"
"The latter." Ghost stories have a way of traveling, but to Joshua's knowledge his had not made it further than Legion territory yet; if it ever reached this coast, he doubted it would even passingly resemble the truth anymore. "I'm sure they will keep looking for proof until I leave or they simply evict me."
His tone suggested he did not care much one way or the other. While he didn't relish the thought of being thrown out of anywhere, he wouldn't exactly be sorry to see the back of Diamond City either. Lucy, and the hope that he could offer her some kind of closure, was the only reason he was even here.
Though maybe even that was a bad idea. What started well enough- a small, sympathetic nod of agreement at her own explanation- swiftly fell apart at the sudden shift into... an interview? Joshua stared, those bright, penetrating eyes wide with almost comical levels of bewilderment.
"... yes. Just two. I'm sorry. I don't quite... are you taking notes?" Yes. Yes she was. When Lucy had said she wanted to know about the Legion's origins, he wasn't expecting her starting point to be his date of birth.
Somehow, Joshua managed to massage some of the composure back into his voice. "We could take turns. I admit, I am curious about how you earned the Legion's ire." Other than by simply existing in their presence as a woman, that was. He tried again. "I was born in New Canaan, or what used to be Ogden- a religious trading community in Utah." A pause. "You come from a vault?"
"Oh, well, that won't happen." She meant the eviction part, even though she would obey the law. What she would end up doing is telling everyone how horrible they are for being racist, that Joshua wasn't even a ghoul, he was a monster of another type!
Let us all hope that such a thing wouldn't have to pass. She would end up leaving with him, and then it would be really awkward. Actually, keep that in mind. Could be hilarious
Lucy glanced down at her notes causally, "This? Yes. I am taking notes." He just used up his question!
She scribbles New Canaan in cursive. Utah. Underlined. "Religion, surprising!" Lucy's cheerfulness continues with the interview. Very professional.
"I do come from a Vault." Nod nod, scribble. "What does your religion believe in?" She tries not to scream the next part, but she can only handle so much, "Primae noctis? Playing dress up in old pieces of, as likely as not: replica Roman attire?"
Buggy wants her to threaten people for money? :( Buggy won't make me hurt anyone! :) Wait, Buggy thinks he can make fun of her morals?? >:(
Instead of starting a fight, she tries to remember how to hold her stupid comments until her stupid comments are needed. "THANK YOU!" Oh, that came out way more aggressive than she hoped it would sound.
"You're welcome!!" Buggy matches her tone and gives her a very, very bright grin along with it. If you wanna party down in clown town you can't get too upset that they want you to ride in the tiny car with 'em, sister! Everybody else in this fucking wasteland has been rolling up to the sus-ass circus and assuming that Buggy is worse and more evil than he is; why's he gotta get it from both sides with this chick thinking he would be better?? He's actually just right!! Like Goldilocks but blunette!!!
"So the hat box is in the green room and the green room's behind the big tent, so we're gonna go to there. Starting you off with the behind-the-scenes. Real VIP shit, yeah?"
The show's not for a while yet so the big tent isn't even open for seating. Buggy unlocks one of the gates for them and leads Lucy inside. It's quiet and kind of humid and stale-smelling in there, and it's empty. And then the lights turn off with a solid heavy-sounding electrical thunk and the spotlight turns on and swings over - it hits the limits of its movement range before it hits Buggy, but he steps forward to get into it, of course. "Hi, Paulie," he yells upward, smiling and waving into the unseeable darkness. "We got a visitor for the weekend. She's gonna do some fuckin, opt-in activities with us while we're closed."
The second spotlight turns on and swings over next to Buggy's, so he gestures for Lucy to step into that one. "Come on up and take a bow, Luce. Let Paulie say hi. That's our lighting tech up there."
A gravelly but femme-coded voice, faint and far above: "Hello!"
Buggy does his green-grass-grows-all-around bit; Lucy nodded enthusiastically, to the point that she thought she might be dizzy.
Lucy has broken the second golden rule: never go to a second location with a weirdo. No one was shoving, dragging, or leading her to this room in any sort of aggressive way. This was such a pleasant change, Lucy actually gave an audible sigh of relief. Thank goodness it wasn't a torture tent, or filled with radscorpions, or brains in jars (she was waiting to check that last box).
The spotlight does impress her, enough that she has to "Wow!" The second one makes her lose her shit.
"Oh wow! Okay! Hi Paulie!" Lucy clocked the voice, she was pro-ghoul. Lucy had to escape a Super Duper Mart that was used as a body-part trafficking post. She released all the ghouls and held the creeps at Mr. Handy-point (RIP, Snip Snip). Like Joan of Arc or Lady Godiva or Greta Thunburg. Lucy has learned to have some tact by now, and doesn't holler out the thing she might have learned.
"This is really amazing, this might be the most organized community I've come across-- there were other nice settlements, but the people there were in a cult or ..." mmm, that's about it.
In the spotlight, she can see Buggy's hair better. "What a lovely shade of blue."
"I think we're not NOT a cult, hon," Paulie calls down, laughter in her voice. "We follow a greater calling!"
"You shouldn't talk about me like that in front of people," says Buggy, preening.
The spotlight on Buggy wiggles side to side: Paulie is shaking it No. "The circus, Cap! The Show Must Go On!"
"Oh, sure, fine! Forget me then!" He throws his hands up in disgust and then crosses his arms and pouts for three seconds, before dropping that act and twirling one of his pigtails around a gloved finger as he grins at Lucy: "Yeah, it is, right?"
Paulie is listening so effectively his audience right now is Lucy and His Entire Crew (they gossip). It's almost physically painful to have to share the credit for shit which wouldn't even be happening if Buggy weren't here, Buggy is the fuckin catalyst for all this shit, but it's necessary to keep the freaks on-side.
"My people work so fuckin hard to run this shit. And they do a great job, right?"
A Greater Calling. It impresses Lucy-- she had that sort of spirit in her. She wanted to better the lives of people and not in some grand scheme, just little things. Maybe it wasn't cold fusion or building supplies or religion (or cult), but it was *SHOWBUSINESS,* she's intrigued.
"It is! It reminds me of my own former," she holds a flat hand to the side of her mouth, as if it's a secret, "home-team colors! More festive, happier, however." Lucy looks at the Clown Hair approvingly.
"They do work hard! You must really be rewarding to work for!" Even if she sounded excited, Lucy hesitated, suddenly worried that Buggy was setting her up. Oh, she'll give him such a smack.
"Flattery gets you everywhere," Buggy says, but Lucy's rewarding comment makes Paulie laugh out loud overhead - Buggy says "Hey!" at her for that, pointing up at her like an act of aggression.
Paulie walks it back a little: "We make enough to live on."
Buggy adds: "We make enough to have our little treats! We're doing fuckin great for ourselves!"
Paulie concludes: "And we make a show happen, which is its own reward."
Buggy adds: "And some of us get our names up in lights, which is also its own reward."
"It seems like this place has no problems!" Except for the mugging. And the questionable choices of comedy. Lucy was desperate to belong to a community again-- and yeah, she didn't have a lot of options. Lucy wanted to do the Right thing despite her horrible past attempts to do so; she learned there is a special area between Right and Wrong.
"You have food service workers, vaudeville acts? You have lighting tech!" Lucy salutes at the spotlight. "I assume you do all your own cleaning? Who sells your tickets? Why are you robbing people? Can't you just rig the games like they do at Nuka-World??"
Buggy grimaces and this time doesn't go right back to Acting. You wanna talk back of house, we will. "Luce, the overhead on this shit?" He points to the roof with both hands. "Astronomical! None of these people want to have to skip their deep fried Fancy Lads, and the brahmin alone - we have a fucking herd just to carry us and all our shit around - Mo's constantly adding to the menagerie and then we gotta feed THOSE mouths too - fresh paint, finding replacements when a fucking light bulb breaks or FUCK FORFEND a FRESNEL - "
"I have spares now!" says Paulie, soothingly.
"And that cost us a guy and a half after three weeks of fuckarounding, and that was back east where there's prewar shit all over, what'll we do if we need shit out here where it's just dirt and dumbasses? I got 28 or 9 people to look after right now and if we gotta roll some losers to do it then so be it."
They might or might not have plenty of caps and plenty of supplies and plenty of everything they need but even if they do it still can't possibly be ENOUGH, you know, they could always be amassing MORE and FLASHIER heaps of stuff and justifying it by saying we need a nest egg to be sure our crew is safe. Buggy is actually just being a good dad or some shit, really!
